Sabine tugs on the sleeve of Lady Calcifet's dress. The incessant nagging prompts the woman to pull away from the child sharply, her brows furrowed in irritation.[break][break]

"That is quite enough, Sabine. 'Arthur' will arrive when he arrives. This nagging and whining is beneath you. Run along now and get changed, you look a mess."[break][break]

The princess pouts, glancing down at her perfectly normal outfit. She was sure that this had been a dress hand-picked only last week by her mother for her to wear. Now, however, it seemed the woman had changed her mind. Or perhaps she was just being mean.[break][break]

Regardless, Sabine relieves the Queen of her presence in favour of seeking out her changing room. Her mother's disappointment is fleeting this time given the excitement surrounding the Vanderbilt's return to the Calcifet estate. Mother and father were throwing an extravagant ball for Remiel's birthday a week in advance and the Vanderbilt's had been invited to attend.[break][break]

It had been well over a year since she had last seen Arthur, and her heart beat just a little bit faster at the prospect of seeing him. She could just picture his adorable, chubby cheeks and wide eyes staring up at her in admiration. [break][break]

It has been forever since he has been to the Calicifet estate, yet somehow finding his way through the hallways is like slipping into an old, comfortable sweater. He remembers the way to Beans' changing room easily, as his mother and father shoo him off to find her as they make discuss politics and make preparations for the evening ball. The queen had seen delighted - well as delighted as the Hammerlocke matriarch could look - when Artie had offered her the gold-flaked truffles made especially from the Circhester head baker.

[break][break] Of course, Artie had asked about Remiel Calcifet — but of course the crown prince was busy off making his own preparations for his birthday party. It was only standard. The fifteen-year old was disappointed, but of course, unsurprised plus he was happy to see his other childhood friend as well.

[break][break] It had been ages, and he was excited to show off how much taller he was now. Last time they'd met, he'd been a few inches shorter than her, following her and Remiel around the castle with blushing cheeks and wide, cherry-pink eyes. Now, he was — well, not an adult, but at least older.

[break][break] Would Sabine Calcifet notice?

[break][break] He finds her room with ease, and leans against the doorframe, finding her likely picking out some garments for the evening ball.

[break][break] "You'd look beautiful in anything," he speaks up finally, head tilted slightly, trying to look suave like the way he'd seen Remiel look while he poured over his studies. He smiles, gaze steady. "Beanie."

Two beautiful, floor-length ballgowns are raised in either hand. She stands in front of a body-length mirror and slowly drapes first dress one and then the other over her chest. She's pouting, clearly not satisfied with either look.[break][break]

And then there is a familiar and yet unfamiliar voice at her door that startles her. The young woman jumps, a noise of alarm squeaking out of her as she turns on her heel. Arthur is met with a wide-eyed, blushing Sabine who blatantly looks him up and down. [break][break]

Gone was the child-like, shorter-than-her Artie and in his place was a just-hit-puberty Arthur. He was still a kid, but he was now a few inches taller than she was and significantly more mature.[break][break]

"Artie?"[break][break]

Excitement bubbles up in her chest and she tosses the two dresses off to the side, draped clumsily over the back of a chair. She darts for the boy, throwing her arms around him unabashed, overwhelmed.[break][break]

"You're so tall and handsome. What happened, how have you been?"[break][break]

A laugh bubbles out of him as he catches the Hammerlocke princess in his arms, taking her and giving her a small twirl before setting her back down on the carpeted floor. Up close, he can tell that he's not the only one who has done some growing. Sabine Calcifet has always been beautiful, but there is just something about her flushed cheeks, high collar bones, the smoothness of her skin that has him feeling like something had changed and yet something has not.

[break][break] He was tall enough - strong enough - now to carry her now. Well, only a little bit. He was only fifteen.

[break][break] He smiles blithely at her, before his eyes narrow teasingly. His tone coy. "Are you telling me I wasn't handsome before?" But his eyes are twinkling. He jests.

[break][break] The boy's gaze draws away from her and to the rest of the room. The changing room is just like he remembers it, similar to his own back at home, yet somehow more grand. This is, after all, the main estate.

[break][break] The two gowns that Sabine had tossed away at his arrival remain discarded, looking lonely on the stool. Artie steps away from her and then examines them, taking the latter, which is a glossy, sparkling blue and draping it in front of him. "What do you think? Does it suit me?" He grins.

[break][break] Oh, his father would have killed him. That's partially why he does it.

She melts into his embrace easily, though she is not unaware of the way his arms wind around her in a more secure fashion and the way his breath tickles against her cheek. It makes her thought process flutter and her belly tingle, and when he sets her down it is far more heartbreaking than she anticipates.[break][break]

"Of course you were, Artie. You know what I mean."[break][break]

She appears bashful and embarrassed, genuinely concerned about hurt feelings if only for a moment. But the boy seems to be teasing, given how quickly he moves on. Naturally, the woman chases him, floating to hover at his side as she had always done. [break][break]

He picks up the sparkling blue dress to hold it in front of him. Sabine giggles, shaking her head.[break][break]

"You've always looked much better in a nice red."[break][break]

She lifts instead the deep red dress that remains, allowing her fingertips to brush his hand as she takes the blue one from him. The red dress is offered and she smooths it across his chest and along his arm. [break][break]

Her compliment breezes by him, and he lets it.

[break][break] Even at 15, Arthur Finnian Vanderbilt knew he was better looking than most. After all the rumors had died down about his birth had been a curse, just as much gossip had run around on how pretty he was. He may not have been a daughter, but he certainly was pretty enough to be one, a fact that had gotten him the title of his fair share of tabloids as a child. Apparently, his mother had had to field off offers of him as a posterchild for various ads at some point or another — though that could have easily been conjecture, who really knew?

[break][break] The blond picks up the dress and pretends to wear it, flashing her a grin as he does so. Beans is quick to follow, her talented gaze following the line of fabric and then reaching for him. The brush of their hands makes something spark, but Artie is too young, too naive, too used to it — it doesn't register.

[break][break] "Oh?" he says with a laugh, then a raised brow as he watches her pull up the other dress. This one, a deep satin-silk, looks like the color of his mothers robes. It matches the light of his eyes, which he can see as he pulls it up to the mirror and appraises it. Then he turns to her and smiles, gently grasping her fingers with his own and squeezing, before handing the garment back to her. "As much as I would love to," he says. "I think your mother - our mothers might have had something different in mind."

[break][break] He pauses, then adds the explanation, "They told me you would have something for me to dress up for Remy's gala." He grins. "That is, if you can share."

[break][break] It was her mother's words - not his, but the way Artie says it is teasing and fun, not biting and cryptic like the Hammerlocke queen.

He catches her fingers between his and it makes her stomach do a flip. Sabine hesitates, suddenly out of breath regardless of the lack of response he has at their closeness. After all, it isn't anything out of the ordinary, the two had always been exceptionally close.[break][break]

And yet that closeness still stings even now the moment he mentions Remiel.[break][break]

The girls expression shifts, her blushing smile fading at the mention of brother dearest. Artie mentions dressing him up for the ball this evening, insinuating that it had been her mother's idea. Sabine glances away, immediately put off by the change in topic.[break][break]

"Of course. Mother had Remiel set aside an outfit for you. I will go and fetch it for you now."[break][break]

And just like that the spell is broken. Sabine sets aside both dresses again and awkwardly tucks her dark hair behind her ear before slipping from the room. Given her brother's busy schedule, mother had left Arthur's outfit with her to look after, knowing that the two would meet up before the ball.[break][break]

[break][break] Instead, he lets her slip away from the room — away from him — and instead finds his attention drawn to the various gowns and other beautiful garments set upon the rack. He turns away from the satin gown and instead his fingers trail over the different colors — satin blue, silk gold, sheer black. They are all beautiful, no doubt, and would look even more so on the beauty that is Sabine Calcifet . Things have changed, but not changed that much.

[break][break] He waits patiently for her return, and when he hears her footsteps, he speaks up. "Speaking of Remy..." he pauses, trying to keep his tone casual. "How is he?"

[break][break] It's not news that Artie has always been curious about his childhood friend. Especially with how much pressure his parents - his mother - has always put on the royal crown, it would have been even more surprising if he hadn't been curious about it. Hadn't sought after it, like a toy just barely out of his reach. No matter how much Artie had tried, he was always chasing after the back of Remiel Calcifet .

Sabine returns promptly, the chosen suit slung over her arm delicately. It's wrapped in a nice suit-protective cover in order to keep it pristine and wrinkle-free.[break][break]

The woman's mood sours immediately, however, at the mention of Remy. Though she might have been the first to mention him, the fact that Artie's attention refocuses on her big brother so eagerly is.. nauseating.[break][break]

One might call it 'jealousy'.[break][break]

"Sure, yeah. I'm sure he is. It's why this is such a big event."[break][break]

She shrugs, handing the suit off to him. [break][break]

"There's a bathroom just over there. Take your time changing- but come out and show me. I want to make sure it looks good."[break][break]

[break][break] Honestly, Artie couldn't blame her. He got jealous of Remiel Calcifet on more than one occasion — how could you not, with a face as nice as his?

[break][break] She tries to hide it, of course, as is typical of her. Artie walks over to here as she hands him the suit and he brings it up to the air in front of him, appraising it, as she speaks. Then, he takes a glance at her, knowingly.

[break][break] "Okay," he says, leaning forward. A hand on her shoulder, lips pressed to her cheek, "Jealousy's a good look on you, Beanie. Just like everything is."

[break][break] With that, the blond steps away from her. He doesn't even bother to retreat to the bathroom — he wrings his fingers around the tie that he was wearing, beginning to unbutton his shirt.

Her fingers retreat, but not fast enough to put distance between them. Artie closes it immediately, stepping forward to whisper against her cheek. But it isn't his words that startle her into silence, is was the warmth that still lingers against her cheek.[break][break]

He'd kissed her.[break][break]

Maybe not in the conventional sense, but he'd kissed her.[break][break]

Warmth fills her cheeks and she glances away, uncomfortable and unable to respond. Eventually, however, her eyes follow him where he turns away. But rather than disappear into the bathroom like she'd suggested, he begins to tug his tie loose and slacken his jacket in the middle of the room.[break][break]

"Artie!"[break][break]

She gasps, lurching forward and placing her palms on either of his shoulders. Sabine pushes him toward the bathroom with the intent to close the door behind him and take a breath. [break][break]
